16-Year-Old’s Quick Action in River Rescue Protects Three Girls and a Police Officer.

On a quiet night near the Pascagoula River, the calm was suddenly shattered by screams. A car carrying three teenage girls had veered off the road and plunged into the dark water, its headlights briefly glowing before disappearing beneath the surface as the current began pulling the vehicle under. Inside the sinking car, the girls found themselves trapped in darkness as the river quickly filled the vehicle. Their cries for help echoed across the riverbank while the current dragged the car deeper into the water.

Not far away, a 16-year-old named Corion Evans heard the desperate shouts. Without pausing to think about the danger, he ran toward the river. He had no life jacket, no rescue equipment, and no time to wait for emergency crews. By the time the vehicle vanished beneath the surface, Evans had already jumped into the river. Battling the strong current and near-total darkness, he swam toward the struggling girls, determined to reach them before the river pulled them under. The water was chaotic, filled with debris and the lingering smell of gasoline from the submerged car. The girls struggled to stay afloat, frightened and disoriented as the current tugged at them.

One by one, Evans guided each girl toward the riverbank. Every rescue demanded strength and patience as he steadied them when they slipped beneath the water and urged them to keep moving toward shore. During the rescue, a responding officer from the Moss Point Police Department was also swept into the current while attempting to help. Despite being exhausted, Evans turned back into the water once more, helping guide the officer safely back to land. Because of his courage that night, four lives were saved. In a terrifying moment when hesitation could have cost everything, a teenager chose to act — proving that extraordinary bravery can come from the most unexpected places.
