Three 18-year-old men have been charged with first-degree murder in connection with the fatal shooting of longtime Kansas City sports radio personality Jimmy Dodds, a case that has deeply affected the local community and renewed concerns about violent crime involving young people.
Dodds, 64, was fatally shot Sunday outside his home in the 3000 block of 82nd Terrace in Kansas City, Kansas. Known affectionately to generations of listeners as “Uncle Jimmy,” Dodds spent years working in sports talk radio and also served as a longtime employee of the Wyandotte County Sheriff’s Office.
Authorities identified the suspects as Aaron Johnson, Mark Nash Jr. and Marquel McGee. All three are being held at the Harvey County Detention Center in Newton, Kansas, pending their transfer to Wyandotte County to face the charges.
Kansas City, Kansas, Police Chief Karl Oakman said investigators believe the shooting grew out of a disagreement involving people who were known to members of Dodds’ family. However, authorities have not released additional details about the dispute or explained what specifically led to the shooting.
According to Dodds’ landlord, Michelle Karanja, Dodds was sitting inside his vehicle behind a parked Chevrolet Tahoe when gunfire broke out. A bullet hole was visible in the rear passenger side of the Tahoe.
Karanja said her husband was working outside at the time and heard three gunshots.
“My husband was home working on the deck, and he heard three gunshots go off,” she said.
She described Dodds as an excellent tenant who had never caused problems at the property.
“He was a very good tenant,” Karanja said. “We never had any problems with him.”
Following Dodds’ death, his two sons are expected to leave the residence and move in with their mother, according to Karanja.
Chief Oakman also used the investigation to discuss broader concerns about youth violence in Kansas City, Kansas. He pointed to recent police efforts targeting gangs and violent crime, saying officers had made 42 arrests during a two-week period. Police also recovered eight firearms and seized nearly nine pounds of methamphetamine, according to the chief.
Oakman stressed the importance of parents taking an active role in preventing young people from becoming involved in violent crime. Authorities, however, have not said that gang activity was directly connected to Dodds’ death.
The investigation remains ongoing as detectives gather evidence and prepare the case for prosecution. Sheriff’s deputies are expected to transport the three suspects from Harvey County back to Wyandotte County, although officials have not announced the timing of that transfer.
Dodds’ death has prompted an outpouring of attention because of both his decades in local sports media and his years of public service. Friends, colleagues and listeners have remembered “Uncle Jimmy” as a familiar voice and respected member of the Kansas City community.
As the investigation continues, prosecutors will work to establish the circumstances surrounding the shooting and build their case against the three defendants.
