On the evening of April 25, 2026, the annual White House Correspondents’ Dinner in Washington, D.C., was thrown into chaos after a major security breach forced the emergency evacuation of President Donald Trump, First Lady Melania Trump, and hundreds of guests attending the event at the Washington Hilton.

Often referred to as the ā€œNerd Prom,ā€ the high-profile gathering had only been underway for about twenty minutes after the President and First Lady entered the ballroom when the incident unfolded. According to federal authorities, a man later identified as 31-year-old Cole Allen of Torrance, California, attempted to push through a secured checkpoint while armed with a shotgun and several knives.

Investigators said Allen, described as a teacher and graduate of the California Institute of Technology, rushed toward the protected area before being intercepted by Secret Service agents in the hotel lobby. Officers quickly tackled and restrained him before he could reach the crowded ballroom where journalists, lawmakers, administration officials, and celebrities were gathered.

During the confrontation, one Secret Service agent was shot at close range. Authorities later confirmed the agent survived because the bullet was stopped by protective body armor. The injured officer was transported to a nearby hospital and was reported to be in stable condition after receiving treatment.

The incident triggered an immediate lockdown of the venue as security teams escorted attendees out of the building. Panic and confusion spread throughout the hotel while heavily armed officers secured entrances and searched surrounding areas for additional threats. Officials later stated there was no evidence suggesting the suspect had accomplices or that the public remained in danger after the arrest.

Although organizers briefly considered continuing the program, the White House Correspondents’ Association ultimately canceled the dinner later that night.

President Trump later praised the rapid actions of Secret Service personnel, calling their response ā€œincredible under pressure,ā€ while condemning the attacker. Federal investigators have since launched a broader inquiry into the suspect’s background, motives, and activities leading up to the attempted breach, renewing concerns over security at major political events in the nation’s capital.
