Michelle’s Brother Didn’t Think Relationship With Barack Would Last

During a recent episode of their “IMO” podcast, Craig Robinson shared that he initially doubted his sister Michelle Obama’s relationship with Barack Obama would last more than a month.

The conversation, which focused on dating and featured actress Tracee Ellis Ross, comes as renewed speculation about the Obamas’ marriage circulates online. The rumors intensified after Michelle chose not to attend the funeral of Jimmy Carter or the inauguration of Donald Trump alongside her husband.

Reflecting on the early days of Michelle and Barack’s relationship, Robinson recalled being skeptical. “We didn’t know who this guy was,” he said, joking about Barack’s name and admitting he assumed the romance would be short-lived. Michelle pushed back on that claim during the podcast, noting that she had experienced several long-term relationships.

Robinson also shared a story about their first meeting with Barack, remembering that their mother, Marian Robinson, was immediately impressed by his height. Despite his doubts, Robinson eventually agreed to play pickup basketball with Barack—a test he said revealed a lot about character. By the end of the game, his opinion had shifted positively.

In recent months, however, public speculation about the Obamas’ marriage has resurfaced. In a candid interview, Barack admitted that his presidency had taken a toll on their relationship, saying he had been “in a deep deficit” with his wife and was working to make up for lost time.

He has previously acknowledged that the demands of serving in the White House from 2009 to 2017 strained their marriage, while also emphasizing that things improved once they had more time together after leaving office.

Michelle Obama has firmly dismissed the rumors. Speaking on a podcast hosted by Sophia Bush, she explained that her recent decisions to skip certain public events were personal choices focused on her well-being—not signs of marital trouble.

She also highlighted the pressure women often face to justify their decisions, noting that people quickly assumed divorce rather than accepting that she was simply making independent choices.

Overall, both Michelle and Barack Obama have acknowledged past challenges in their marriage but continue to publicly affirm their relationship, pushing back against ongoing speculation.
