Former U.S. President Donald Trump was awarded the inaugural FIFA Peace Prize on Friday, marking the first time the global governing body for soccer has issued the distinction. The announcement was shared through Trump’s War Room account on the social media platform X, accompanied by a video displaying the trophy and highlighting what supporters described as his efforts to promote peace and resolve conflicts worldwide. The award ceremony reportedly took place at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts during an event linked to the World Cup final draw. Gianni Infantino, president of FIFA, personally presented the prize. The trophy features a design of golden hands holding a soccer ball, symbolizing unity and cooperation through sport. Trump also received a commemorative medal, which he placed around his neck shortly after accepting the award.
According to the accompanying certificate, the FIFA Peace Prize is intended to be awarded annually to individuals who advance peace, cooperation, and global unity through leadership and concrete actions. In his remarks at the ceremony, Trump described the recognition as “one of the great honors” of his life. He also noted that his conversations with Infantino included references to diplomatic initiatives they believe contributed to saving millions of lives.
Trump highlighted several foreign policy efforts from his presidency, pointing to conflicts he claimed were either resolved or prevented during his time in office. While these claims remain a matter of political debate, they were central to the justification presented for the award. In addition, Trump referenced ongoing initiatives tied to international cooperation, including preparations for the upcoming FIFA World Cup.
Earlier in March, Trump signed an executive order establishing a task force to support the organization and security of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which will be jointly hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico. At the same time, diplomatic efforts related to the ongoing war in Ukraine have continued to develop. U.S. officials indicated that Ukraine had broadly agreed to the framework of a proposed American peace plan, with only minor details left unresolved. Ukrainian representatives have suggested that progress has been made in negotiations, noting that an understanding was reached on key terms during recent discussions in Geneva. However, the situation remains complex, as both sides continue to engage in active military operations.

Despite ongoing diplomatic engagement, fighting on the ground has intensified. Ukrainian officials reported a surge of Russian drone and missile strikes, resulting in civilian casualties and infrastructure damage. Russia, in turn, has reported Ukrainian drone attacks on its own territory, also leading to casualties. These developments underscore the challenges of negotiating peace amid active hostilities.
Meanwhile, European allies have expressed frustration at not being fully included in earlier stages of the negotiation process. In response, they developed an alternative proposal, emphasizing that any agreement affecting the European Union or NATO must involve the consent of all member states. Russia has rejected the European framework, highlighting ongoing disagreements among international stakeholders.
