Vance Rips Supreme Court’s Tariff Ruling As ‘Lawlessness’…

Vice President JD Vance sharply criticized a recent U.S. Supreme Court decision that struck down President Donald Trump’s sweeping global tariffs, calling the ruling “lawlessness” in a post on X. The Court ruled 6–3 that Trump exceeded his authority under the International Emergency Economic Powers Act (IEEPA) by imposing broad tariffs without clear authorization from Congress. The majority opinion stated that while Congress has granted presidents certain powers to regulate imports, the IEEPA does not give unlimited authority to impose large-scale trade penalties without explicit legislative approval. The ruling represents a major setback for one of the central pillars of Trump’s trade policy, which aimed to reduce trade deficits and strengthen domestic manufacturing.

Vance argued that the Court misinterpreted congressional intent, claiming lawmakers had given the president authority to regulate imports. He warned that the decision would make it more difficult for the administration to protect American industries and supply chain resilience. However, he emphasized that Trump still has other legal tools available to impose tariffs and defend American workers.Trump also criticized the decision but expressed confidence that it would not significantly limit his broader trade strategy. He referenced language from a dissenting opinion suggesting the ruling may not severely constrain future presidential tariff authority. Trump stated that alternative statutory powers remain available and indicated that his administration would continue pursuing trade measures through other legal channels.

The Department of Justice had argued that long-standing trade deficits constituted a national emergency, justifying the use of IEEPA. However, opponents contended that no president in the law’s 50-year history had used it to impose tariffs and argued that ongoing trade deficits do not meet the standard of an “unusual and extraordinary threat.”
