A veteran U.S. Customs and Border Protection agent has warned that finding the alleged abductor of Nancy Guthrie may be extremely difficult due to the challenging terrain and Tucson’s proximity to the Mexican border.Nancy Guthrie, 84, was reported missing on February 1 after she failed to attend her usual 11 a.m. church service in Tucson, Arizona. She was last seen the night before when her son-in-law drove her home after a family dinner. When authorities responded to her residence, they found blood on her front door and signs of forced entry, raising concerns of a possible kidnapping. Two media outlets reportedly received alleged ransom notes, but the FBI and the Pima County Sheriff’s Office have not confirmed their authenticity.
Art Del Cueto, a longtime border agent who lives near Guthrie’s home but is not involved in the investigation, told the Daily Mail that Tucson’s rugged desert landscape could hinder search efforts. He explained that the remote terrain and dense desert vegetation can make it difficult to locate suspects, drawing from his years of experience conducting patrols and search-and-rescue missions in the area.Del Cueto also emphasized Tucson’s close proximity to the southern border, noting that a suspect could potentially reach Mexico in less than 90 minutes. He suggested that this factor increases the complexity of the case and may be one reason authorities are withholding certain details from the public.
Former FBI special agent Dr. Bryanna Fox offered a potential profile of the suspect, suggesting it is likely a man in his 30s or 40s with a criminal record and experience evading law enforcement. However, Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos confirmed that no suspects have been identified.Federal agents and K-9 units have searched Guthrie’s home and nearby wooded areas. The investigation remains active, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
