A quiet highway checkpoint in Texas suddenly turned into a scene of chaos, danger, and life-changing consequences. What began as a routine stop quickly escalated into a desperate attempt to escape that left a federal agent injured and a young driver facing prison. On August 1, 2023, agents with the United States Border Patrol were conducting standard inspections along U.S. Highway 57. Thousands of drivers pass through such checkpoints every year without incident. But when 26-year-old Kevin Dominguez arrived in his sedan, the situation quickly took an unexpected turn.
During the inspection, a Border Patrol canine alerted agents to possible activity in the vehicle’s trunk. When officers opened it, they discovered an undocumented person hidden inside. At that moment, instead of cooperating, authorities say Dominguez made a sudden and reckless decision. He threw the car into reverse and accelerated away from the checkpoint. In the process, the vehicle struck a federal agent who had been standing nearby. The impact created a tense and dangerous situation as Dominguez sped off in an attempt to escape.
The getaway did not last long. Law enforcement officers quickly located and arrested him shortly after he fled the checkpoint. Federal prosecutors charged Dominguez with assaulting a federal officer and unlawfully transporting an undocumented individual. In court, they argued that his attempt to flee put multiple lives at risk, including the injured agent and the person hidden in the trunk. Although the officer later recovered, the judge emphasized the seriousness of the act. Dominguez was sentenced to 18 months in federal prison, followed by a period of supervised release, reflecting the gravity of the moment.
