The Boeing E-4B Nightwatch, often called the “Flying Pentagon,” is one of the most important aircraft in the United States’ national security system. Built to function as a mobile command center, it ensures that the government can continue operating even during the most extreme crises, including nuclear war or large-scale national emergencies.
The aircraft was developed during the Cold War, when the threat of nuclear conflict pushed military planners to consider worst-case scenarios. Leaders feared that traditional command centers on the ground could be destroyed or rendered useless during a surprise attack.
