Ashley Biden has reportedly filed for divorce from her husband, Howard Krein, ending a marriage that lasted more than a decade. Court documents filed in Philadelphia show that the 44-year-old submitted the divorce petition on Monday to the city’s Court of Common Pleas.
The couple married in June 2012 during a ceremony in Greenville, Delaware. Their relationship began after Ashley was introduced to Krein in 2010 by her late brother, Beau Biden. Over the years, the pair largely kept their private life away from public attention despite their connection to one of America’s most prominent political families.
Because divorce records in Philadelphia are sealed, the exact reasons behind the separation have not been publicly disclosed. Neither Ashley Biden nor Krein has issued a formal statement regarding the filing. Krein, a physician and plastic surgeon, has continued to maintain a private medical practice while avoiding significant political visibility.
Ashley Biden occasionally spoke publicly about her marriage and family life. During the 2024 Democratic National Convention, while introducing her father, Joe Biden, she shared a personal story about their wedding. She recalled that even though Joe Biden was serving as vice president at the time, he personally helped organize many of the reception details. Her remarks highlighted the close family dynamic often associated with the Biden family.
On the same day the divorce petition became public, Ashley Biden posted a message on Instagram that many interpreted as reflecting personal change. The post included a photograph of herself walking through a park while giving a thumbs-up gesture. She paired the image with the song “Freedom” by Beyoncé and wrote about “new life,” “new beginnings,” and setting “new boundaries.”
Although she did not directly mention the divorce in the post, the timing and wording drew attention online, with many viewing it as a subtle acknowledgment of a new chapter in her personal life after 13 years of marriage.
