Iran’s New Supreme Leader Issues First Statement With Alarming Threats

In a dramatic moment amid intensifying regional conflict, a statement attributed to Mojtaba Khamenei was broadcast on Iranian state television on Thursday, March 12. The message, read by a news anchor while a still image of Khamenei appeared on screen, is believed to be his first public communication since assuming Iran’s top leadership role following the death of his father, Ali Khamenei.

Notably, the broadcast included no video or audio of Mojtaba himself, a detail that quickly fueled speculation internationally about his physical condition and whereabouts. His reported appointment as supreme leader by the Assembly of Experts on March 8 came shortly after his father’s death in late February, an event linked by Iranian sources to a joint U.S.–Israeli strike that struck a residence in Tehran and ignited a broader regional crisis. In the televised message, Khamenei vowed retaliation for those killed in the conflict, warning Iran’s adversaries that the country would pursue revenge. He declared that Iran would not hesitate to avenge what he described as the blood of “martyrs,” emphasizing that the response would not be limited to the killing of his father but would extend to all Iranians lost during the war.

The address also highlighted Iran’s determination to use strategic leverage in the conflict, including pressure on the vital Strait of Hormuz, a critical global shipping route for oil and energy supplies. Khamenei suggested that the possibility of restricting access to the strait could remain a bargaining tool if hostilities continue. While the statement projected defiance and resolve, the absence of a live appearance has intensified debate among observers about Iran’s internal situation. Analysts say the message appears aimed at reassuring domestic supporters while signaling to adversaries that Tehran remains prepared for a prolonged confrontation.
